Background of the Study

Time management is a critical life skill that enables individuals to efficiently organize and execute tasks. Participation in school sports has been linked to the development of effective time management skills, as students learn to balance rigorous training schedules with academic responsibilities (Akin, 2023). In Ilorin West, physical education programs and extracurricular sports offer a structured environment where students are required to allocate time for practice, competition, and study. This dual commitment promotes discipline, prioritization, and the ability to manage multiple tasks concurrently (Bello, 2024). School sports serve as a practical context for developing these skills by requiring punctuality, strategic planning, and the adherence to a fixed schedule (Chukwu, 2025). Additionally, sports activities often involve setting training goals, monitoring progress, and adjusting routines, which mirror the essential components of effective time management. Research in similar contexts has shown that students involved in competitive sports tend to exhibit better academic performance, partly due to improved organizational skills and enhanced time management (Dada, 2023). In Ilorin West, the emphasis on sports participation in schools has created opportunities for students to develop these critical life skills early on. However, while many educators recognize the benefits of sports in fostering time management, there remains a need for a systematic investigation into how sports participation specifically contributes to this skill set. The relationship between sports and time management is influenced by factors such as the intensity of training, academic demands, and the support systems provided by coaches and school administrators (Emeka, 2024). This study aims to explore these factors and provide an empirical analysis of the impact of school sports on students' time management skills in Ilorin West. By doing so, the research seeks to contribute to the literature on the broader educational benefits of sports and offer practical recommendations for enhancing time management through structured sports programs.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the recognized benefits of school sports in developing time management skills, many students in Ilorin West face challenges balancing their athletic commitments with academic responsibilities. Observations indicate that while some students excel in managing their schedules, others struggle to prioritize tasks, resulting in academic underperformance and increased stress (Femi, 2023). A significant contributing factor appears to be the lack of formal guidance on how to integrate sports and academics effectively. Although school sports programs are designed to instill discipline, the absence of structured support systems means that not all students benefit equally (Gbenga, 2024). Inconsistent coaching practices, varying levels of academic support, and differing personal circumstances further complicate this relationship (Hakeem, 2025). These challenges underscore the need for a focused investigation into how participation in school sports influences time management skills and the conditions under which these benefits are maximized. Without targeted interventions, students may continue to experience difficulties in managing their time, ultimately impacting both their academic performance and overall well-being. This study seeks to identify the factors that facilitate or hinder the development of time management skills among student athletes in Ilorin West, providing recommendations for educators and coaches to create a more balanced and supportive environment. By addressing these issues, the study aims to bridge the gap between sports participation and academic achievement, ensuring that students are better equipped to manage their responsibilities effectively (Ibrahim, 2023).

Objectives of the Study

• To assess the impact of participation in school sports on students’ time management skills.

• To identify challenges that hinder effective time management among student athletes.

• To propose strategies for integrating sports and academic schedules to enhance time management.

Research Questions

• How does participation in school sports affect students’ time management skills?

• What are the primary challenges faced by student athletes in balancing sports and academics?

• Which strategies can improve time management among students involved in sports?

Research Hypotheses

• H₁: Active participation in school sports is positively correlated with improved time management skills.

• H₂: Lack of structured support systems negatively affects the ability of student athletes to manage time.

• H₃: Integrating academic and sports schedules enhances time management among students.

Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it provides empirical evidence on the role of school sports in developing time management skills among students in Ilorin West. The findings will offer practical recommendations for educators, coaches, and policy-makers to design balanced schedules that promote academic and athletic success. Enhanced time management skills can lead to improved academic performance and reduced stress among students. The insights from this study will contribute to a broader understanding of how extracurricular activities can positively influence essential life skills, ultimately fostering a more disciplined and organized student body (Kayode, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study is limited to examining the influence of school sports on students' time management skills in Ilorin West Local Government Area. It does not extend to other regions or academic subjects, focusing solely on sports participation and time management.

Definitions of Terms
